Dave Chappelle - For What It's Worth - DVD Info
NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - The reigning king of the television DVD is ready to re-enter the market.
Comedy Central star Dave Chappelle is issuing another DVD based on a stand-up special he performed in September on Showtime, along with new bonus footage. Sony won a bidding war for the material, according to sources, by luring Chappelle with a seven-figure advance. Sony declined comment.
The demand for the DVD rights to the comedian's work is not surprising; the first season of Comedy Central's "Chappelle's Show" is the best-selling TV series on DVD ever, closing in on 2 million units sold.
Sony, which is busy rolling out a likely challenger to "Chappelle" with a DVD collection of the first three seasons of "Seinfeld," is expected to release the Chappelle DVD in June.
Comedy Central and Paramount may be kicking themselves for not grabbing the DVD rights to the Showtime special, but consolation will come soon: The season 2 DVD of "Chappelle's Show" from Paramount hits stores in February. Comedy Central, Paramount and Showtime are all owned by Viacom Inc.
